Letter from America: I do not make the mistake of revering a “cow chewing its cud!” ( Thư Mỹ Quốc: CON KHÔNG PHẠM SAI LẦM TÔN KÍNH KẺ ÓI MỬA KIẾN THỨC)

Dear Holy and Venerable Guru,

I bow my head down to your lotus feet.

Guru’s merit is inconceivable and beyond measure.

May Guru and his consort live long and happy lives for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Wholeheartedly I thank you for this article and the guidance it provides to keep one in the correct orbit of Dharma. I have learned to distinguish between what is true and what is apparent (seems to be true) as well as establish a new relationship of identity that will assist me in the my path and protect me from mistaking copper for gold, or perhaps even worse, mistaking gold for copper!

Protect me from mistaking copper for gold, or perhaps even worse, mistaking gold for copper!

I understand now the difference between scholar and practitioner.  Awareness of the difference between these two kinds of people will ensure I do not make the mistake of revering a “cow chewing its cud!”  Application of my knowledge of this difference will also keep me safe from the pitfall of self-attachment and dharma-attachment that could lead me to unwittingly become the cow chewing its cud.  I am a university student and have been conditioned to grant respect to scholars.  I will now be more mindful in granting respect, not to the most scholarly (could be copper), but to those who demonstrate the wisdom to practice and apply learning effectively and perfectly (gold!).

“cow chewing its cud!”

I will strive for Application Bodhicitta thru the five rules introduced by Dharmakirti:

  1. Know exactly what is needed to renounce
  2. Know thoroughly methods to abandon them
  3. Know clearly which objects need practicing
  4. Know completely methods to practice them
  5. Transmit knowledge to students with unconditioned compassion

Dharmakirti

Last night I read the article “Avioding Misapprehension and Deviated Attitude Towards Meditation.”  Through understanding of the wisdom imparted in that article, working in concert with the wisdom conveyed in this article, I have gained a deeper appreciation for the identity expressed by His Holiness the 12th Gyawlang Drukpa: “DHARMA IS LIFE. LIFE IS DHARMA.”  I see this equation clearly when Dharma is practiced uninterruptedly in daily life, like a non-stop, flowing river.

  1. Tantra Lanidha (Ralph Keating) says:

    Dear Honorable and Holy Guru,

I bow my head down to touch the miraculous lotus feet of the most venerable Guru, pointing the way to liberation and the ultimate happiness of the Buddha Nature.

Guru’s merit is far beyond my comprehension and is immeasurable.

May Guru and his consort live long, healthy, and happy lives for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!  I’m deeply honored to see my comment on Guru’s article, posted here as an article itself.  I’m honored, not because it feeds my ego, but because it represents progress on my path to enlightenment and my increasing understanding of Dharma through the process of Guru’s design and provided here on Chanhtuduy.com; it also represents the harmony and teamwork of my friend and dharma sister—Mật Diệu Hằng—and I.

Over the past two years, I’ve been reading and reading Guru’s teachings.  During that time, I’m not proud of my failures in the step of commenting.  Sometimes I wouldn’t comment because I worry my understanding is not good enough or my words are not right. However, I’ve been raising my understanding how commenting is not only an important step of the process, but is essential—being right action leading to right thought.  Do not listen to the voice that prevents you from that step of commenting, my friends. It is the voice of wrong thought and will lead you to wrong action. Mật Diệu Hằng introduced me to this website and she is constantly reminding me to read and comment. When we are not yet fully enlightened, we do not always have right thought or right actions.  But thanks to my friend’s steadfast support and care, I’ve manage to make the time and effort to keep reading and commenting despite the distractions of a busy life and an unenlightened mind.

Please, my friends, keep reading and commenting!!!  It is important and essential for you, your family, your friends, and all sentient beings.

May we all come to understand and follow the directions and teachings of our Holy Guru, and simply follow the direction he points because he points us to attain enlightenment and the true happiness of the Buddha Nature.

May all sentient beings be free from suffering and its causes.

May all beings suffering from the pandemic of the coronavirus find freedom from that suffering and may we all see and end to its existence and harm.

    ML,

    Tantra Lanidha (Ralph Keating)

    Dear Guru!

I read the article “Letter from America: I do not make the mistake of revering a “cow chewing its cud!”

I really rejoiced in Tantra Lanidha’s article which wrote after he read Guru’s articles.

Wisdom and Bodhicitta of Guru helped many diciples and readers of chanhtuduy.com who are inremote lands, still could approach right Dharma and armed Bodhiyanga of discrimination for themselves. So they can avoid mistaking copper for gold, or perhaps even mistaking gold for copper.

Thank dharma friend  Tantra Lanidha so much for your sharing.

May Guru and his consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May the torch of transcendent wisdom enlighten every where.

May Tantra Lanidha be diligent in practing and every right wishes come true.

May the coronavirus pandemic will be soon over.

  11. Dear Tantra Lanidha,

I am delighted to read your sharing after reading Guru’s article. Understanding the difference between a scholar and a practitioner to distinguish, to avoid the mistake of revering a “cow chewing its cud”, this is the right view of paying respect towards right person, which prevent us from falling to dangerous situations for our spiritual lives (now and after that) due to take refuge in wrong spiritual teacher (as Khetsun Sangpo Rinpoche’s saying “Choosing wrong teacher as mistaking poison”).

That’s such a great knowledge, and also a good luck for you, me and all of us – disciples and learners at ITA institute. And, as you wrote in your very inspiring comment, thanks to reading and commenting on chanhtuduy.com, we get more and more benefits day by day. May we all be always diligent to read and comment on this unique website for keeping the right track following holy Guru, to the city of liberation.

May Guru and his consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May Tantra Lanidha’s legitimate wishes come true.

May the covid-19 pandemic will be soon eliminated.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

I bow before your lotus feet
I am thankful to our holy Guru for sharing this article. It is an honest expression of a disciple who has undergone your teaching through several articles on chanhtuduy.com , received your guidance, imbibed it and tried to practice the Dhamma of his own. It is a pleasant surprise that his learning has enabled him to understand, all that glitters is not gold, as well as to differentiate between the scholarly awareness and experience yield knowledge. It is also indicative to the fact that there is difference between information and wisdom. Wisdom is reflected through the humble behaviour and enlightened practice in everyday life, which becomes the source of inspiration for others too. Pure scholars have the information but not the true knowledge. Some of them simple parrot the books without understanding, but this does not help the on the path of spiritual advancement. I am happy to learn that the author of this article, in his very young age, is able to differentiate the theoretic consciousness from practical wisdom. And in the light of his learning he has taken a vow to strive for Bodhicitta through five rules introduced by Dharmakirti.
His learning is also reflected in his action too. He has expressed his gratitude to the as well as extended thanks to all his friends who have been instrumental in this holy pursuit. I am happy to read sublime aspects of Mat Dieu Hang and her kind nature to help everyone in path of one’s prosperity leading to cessation of one’s defilements resulting in final liberation through the Buddhist way, in his comment. This humility is the indicator of advancement in the path of Buddhist wisdom. It is a fact that Rose Tran is the ceaseless source of inspiration for many including me. She got me connected to me also.

May all sentient beings be not affected of the pandemic Covid19.
Long live our Guru along with his consort
