A long distance trip 7: IT IS GREEN BUT NOT GREAT

After distance around 450 km, we have arrived Sa Pa town what is very famous for tourists (Vietnamese or foreigners). I think it is great, no word to praise, only taken some photos to you. When I was young I heard about Sa Pa town by words of mouth, and have read in the newspaper. I wanted to be there! No computer, no cell phone, no TV even. I’d just a good book and relax but that was just an impossible dream.

Sa Pa town

After 30 years I have just been here so you can’t understand how did I feel. The weather liked as my friend. It is sunny and a bit cool when I needed. I was sitting on the plateau, near the top of the mountain and was looked down, I have seen only one  green. At the moment, I have recalled a famous quotation from the poet Goethe, “Every theory is gray, the fact of  trees’s life are evergreen.”. In fact, here there is a woman of ethnic minorities doesn’t learn Enlish, doesn’t study English, doesn’t understand English grammar, but she speaks English very well. She became a tour guide, so she makes money for living by speaking English at the present.  I saw her speak English to foreigners and took them around Sa Pa town. By the way, I want to say that many people speak English well, it’s because of their regular contact with foreigners. There have been cases of Sa Pa girls getting married abroad through English language.

I was sitting on the plateau, near the top of the mountain and was looked down, I have seen only one  green.

The poet Goethe, “Every theory is gray, the fact of  trees’s life are evergreen.”

I have a question for you : Which language practitioners Buddha’s Dharma speak? By right speech! It is mean no talking about evil words, about divination, about the future, about good days and bad days, feng shui,  about other people, about lying…only talking about Dharma with slogan “Dharma is Life and Life is Dharma”. The person who can speak right speech must have right view. Learners and disciples of Tantra House Mat gia Song Nguyen (ITA institude) have right view through reading articles and commenting on chanhtuduy.com. The right speech is one of Boddhicitta’s aspect.

Which language practitioners Buddha’s Dharma speak? By right speech!

– Guru, please come in

– Yes, I am ready

Flowers at Sapa Town

I taken up a car and said good bye Sa Pa. I think it is green but isn’t great as woman of ethnic minorities speak English very well but she can’t write English. She can make money by talking English but she can’t teach English. The same here, only practice Dharma without right view can’t speak right speech, and without right speech you speak all day but it is group of conversations each other, or isn’t worth anything. When I was in the car, I had dream that people only speak about Dharma. May all  sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature. Om mani padme hum!

I taken up a car and said good bye Sa Pa.

I had dream that people only speak about Dharma. May al  sentien beings attain happiness Buddha’s nature

I bow my head at the lotus feet of  Guruji.

The great quote cited by Guruji from the  poet Goethe : ” Every theory is gray, the fact of trees life are ever green” is  really looks simple in Words but  full of great meaning  related to bodhichitta. With this one single sentence , Guruji gives a great dharma lesson.!

Man throws stone at the tree causing pain to it but inspite of its injury to its body it yields fruits to him. Again  man cuts it’s branches to get firewood. But when he gets tired, he lies down the tree to relax. The tree gives him shelter to the same person who hurts  the tree ! What a sentiment of great bodhichitta the  plant generates And Buddha’s Nature it teaches to the Man !

The language is there to express and understand our heart felt our feelings generated in the mind  !. The other things like grammar and spellings etc are negligible in the day to day of our correspondence!. They are all required to get degree certificates or PhD etc. If your inner feelings are that of Buddha’s Nature it is suffice  irrespective of whatever language you  talk or write. There is no special Buddhist language, although Pali and Sanskrit languages are prevailing in Buddha’s life time.!

    Dear Guru!

I am delighted to read your new article : “A long distance trip 7 : It is green but not great”.

I’m rejoice to see the beautiful photos.

Throught this article, i understand that “Which language pratitioners Buddha’s Dharma speak? By right speech! It is mean no talking about evil words, about divination, about the future, about good days and bad days, feng shui, about other people, about lying…only talking about Dharma with slogan “Dharma is Life and Life is Dharma”.

May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha.

May the Covid-19 pandemic will be soon eliminated.

    Om mani padme hum.

  3. Mật Thủy says:

    Dear Guru,

Thank you Guru for giving us another interesting dharma gift. It’s the seventh one now, which is amazing “green and great” in your English language applying.

Sapa is beautiful and the weather there is so nice along with your steps. I’m cheerful with your long-ago dream that now has come true effortlessly. Your story inspires me to believe more in Dharma, that “All prosper in life is due to practice Dharma” (Lama Zopa Rinpoche).

From this article, you have taught us the lesson of right speech, which is so important to prevent us from leaking merit and gain more merit. Everyone without disability all is able to speak, many of them are even skilful in speaking, which is “green but not great”. It’s great when we have the right view to apply in speaking so that our speeches benefit the others. Then the right speech is becoming one of Bodhicitta’s aspects.

Thank you Guru for the meaningful lesson. I will accumulate right view diligently by reading and commenting on chanhtuduy.com to have more “green and great” speeches (right speech) in my daily life.

May Guru and his consort good health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings. May Guru’s Dharma trip be smooth and successful.

May the Covid-19 pandemic soon come to an end.

    Om mani padme hum!

  4. Mật Chánh Tấn says:

    Dear holy Guru,

I am delighted to read your article. Thank you Guru for this article because it also gives me another lesson about “Dharma is life, life is Dharma”.

As from the story of the girl who can speak English to make money as a tour guide but she can’t teach English, can not write English because she might not have basic learning of English. The same situation can apply to people who do not have the right view as the Guru has emphasized in this article: “only practice Dharma without right view can’t speak right speech”. Many people just follow other people’s actions or just observe what other people did, then say that they were doing Dharma. However, they might not identify or understand whether their actions are following Buddha’s teaching or not because they did not have the basic learning or important foundation learning of Dharma, which is the right view. Thank you Guru for this article because it helps me to understand more about the importance of the right view. I understand that by diligently reading and commenting articles on Chanhtuduy.com, I would build up the right view foundation, which then leads me to have right thought, right speech, right action, v..v and apply gradually Dharam into real life.

May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May the epidemic of Covid-19 come to end soon.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  5. Mật Từ says:

    Dear Guru,

I really enjoyed reading and immersing myself in the amazing beauty of Sapa through the pictures, which is also a dream destination for me. After reading, I understood deeper and broader meaning of the common saying “Every theory is gray, the fact of trees’ life are evergreen”. I understand that by believing the saying at one side, people may jump to conclusion that the theory is not important in order to take advantage of their situation in which they are lacking of the theoretical foundation. A strong theory strengthens the practice, as such nurturing right views support Buddhist practitioners to speak right speech and to absorb right views and accordingly apply into their daily lives. I am glad to recognize that we are accompanied both theory and practice in our lives under Guru’s teachings. I am so proud of the language we have been learning from Guru which is right speech. I will keep in mind about Guru’s teaching the meaning of right speech, concentrate on the slogan “Dharma is Life and Life is Dharma”. Thank you very much for bringing us a meaningful article with beautiful pictures in Sapa. I sincerely pray for Guru’s health and longevity for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the Buddha nature’s happiness.

    May Covid19 pandemic end soon.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  6. Mật Hải says:

    Dear holy Guru,

I enjoy reading the 7th letter from your long-distance trip.

Thank you, Guru, for giving us those meaningful lessons and beautiful pictures as well.

I learn that when people good at speaking a second language like English is not enough to become a great human. I think they are just the regular “green person” like the girl that you mention in this article. The good one is the person who can do well both speaking and writing, also listening and reading skills. The better one is the person who can master that language (like English) for the benefit of their own, friends, relatives.etc. And the great one is the person who can use the second language to teaching other beings ‘Buddha language’ which is Guru has named “Right speech” (not just Pali or Sankrit words).

The right speech come from Right view, and the Right view come from the Right teacher – Kalyanamitra, as Buddha teachings in lots of Sutra.
I think that Guru is a big Kalyanamitra with a large heart who can use the 2nd, the 3rd language (like English, Russian) to teachings Buddha language for many people all around the world. So, in my opinion, Guru is a Great person who is the best ideal for me to obey, to learn from the past till now and until enlightenment.

I am grateful for Guru’s lesson today.

I sincerely pray for your health and longevity for the sake of sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
May the COVID-19 pandemic come to an end soon.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  10. Mật Khả Phúc says:

    Dear Holy Guru,

Thank you for your meaningful article and beautiful pictures of the new destination in your long trip. I’m blessed and happy to see great photos of Guru and breathtaking scenes in Sapa.    For an ordinary person, only the definition and meaning of right speech are already abstract and complex. But through your teaching, I have not only understood the language practitioners Buddha’s Dharma speak is right speech which is only talking about Dharma, “Dharma is life, life is Dharma” but also know how to have right speech and where to earn right view. I’m thankful to Guru for all of your teachings which you have simplified “Buddha teaching” and used lot of examples to help us to understand right view. That’s a great proof for the master of “Buddha language”, the Great Guru. The ethnic girl who can speak English through talking with foreigner but can’t write, can’t understand grammar reminds me about those people who diligently go to temple and read sutra every day but don’t even understand a word of it and still believe in wandering spirit, fortune teller, fengshui. The ethnic girl might get money from her English speaking for tour guide job but that’s just temporary money because she couldn’t compete with whom who studied in school, be professional in English as well as in tourism industry, plus she can’t work in another field which requires more than an English speaking skill, at the end, she will get nothing. But if she spend more time and effort to learn more about the language, her future will be bright. It makes me think about ourselves, we have an precious chance to meet Guru who is so generosity to give us the most benefit Dharma methods while sentient beings out there still struggle to seek for the truth happiness. If we don’t put effort on Dharma practicing, we will loose our chance and be back to the sorrow Samara. Thank you Guru for this beneficial teaching.

May myself and Dharma brothers always obey Guru, nurture devotion toward Guru as the Dharma orbit.

I pray for your Dharma trip to be successful. I sincerely pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your consort for the sake of all sentient beings.
May Covid-19 pandemic will eliminate soon.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha nature.

And from right view we will have right speech which is one of Bodhicitta’s aspects. Thank you Guru for creating the Duy Ma Cat castle that gives us the opportunity to cultivate right speech. I will keep in mind Guru’s teaching to cultivate right speech for the sake of myself and others. May Guru and your consort have a good health and longevity for the benefits of all sentient beings.

On the contrary, applying Dharma is life, life is Dharma, evergreen. The result is inner happiness, success in life and social achievement. The Dharma becomes valuble to make life better.

    Dear holy Guru,

I am wordless when reading your 7th English article. Thank you so much for your compassion up on us. You have made the long distance dharma trip and when you go to anywhere, you write English articles for us to enjoy the beauty of the scenery and nature; more importantly, you have given us many valuable lessons “Dharma is life, Life is Dharma”. So amazing!

The sentence “It is green but not great” has drawn my interest with its multi-leveled meanings beyond words. After reading your article, I realized the importance of right view, which leads to right speech. Even someone can speak English very well and fluently, but they do not have “right view”, they cannot write meaningful articles and they cannot speak the right topics. Likewise, many monks or Buddhist teachers can speak very well, but without right view, their speaking still fall in the evil things, worldly affairs; the listeners get nothing but suffering in Samsara. There are many famous speakers around the world, but they have been suffering so much because of wrong view.

The “evergreen” related to worldly affairs has resulted in the “gray” of samsaric tears. Only right view can change the “gray” of Samsara into the light of true happiness. Guru who has mastered right view is like the huge source of bright light guiding all sentient beings to enter the city of liberation. For disciples, if they do not have right view about Guru devotion, they get nothing but suffering despite their diligence in practicing Dharma. The most important thing is that we should keep in mind that only relying on the source of liberation, we can get enlightenment.

Thank you so much for enlightening me to the path of liberation by the torch of right view.

May you and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

May covid 19 pandemic come to an end soon.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

From here, I am grateful to Guru for giving us the great proof for “Dharma is the Life, Life is Dharma” through the learning and using English to learning and applying Dharma by right view. I have received more teachings by Guru for the importance of right view because “The person who can speak right speech must have right view” so that “Only practice Dharma without right view can’t speak right speech, and without right speech you speak all day but it is group of conversations each other, or isn’t worth anything.” As in the present, some of monk can learn Dharma, talk the Dharma very well but with wrong view while they still receive the offering from beings. This means the result for all of them still on the Samsara. One more time I feel I am lucky and thankful to Guru who help us built a “castle” is Chanhtuduy.com for us, where I can meet Guru and listen Guru teaching us about Dharma, show us the guidance to go according to the right way on the path of enlightenment. While outside all beings still live with sufferings in Samsara.

  29. Mật Giác Đăng says:

    Dear Guru,

I have a deep rejoice to read this seventh English article you wrote on the long distance trip.

Thank you so much Guru for giving us more beneficial dharma lessons as well as bringing us so closely and vividly the breathtaking beauty of Sapa town, one dreaming destination for many tourists. I am happy to know your impossible dream from 30 years ago, now comes true, even in a much more better way. Because with Guru wholehearted Bodhicitta, the moment you sitting on the plateau, near the top of mountain and looking down becomes not only a memorable experience but also a beneficial one for all of us who been inspired, been motivated with the firm faith on the right way we following, and mostly, been continuously learnt more and more priceless dharma lessons which imbued in spirit of “Dharma is Life, Life is Dharma”.

Often, when reading about ethnic people at tourist attractions speak English fluently, most of readers feel excited and happy for them, even praise them because of their cleverness in catching up language as a mean for making living. I myself was used to that. But now, through your article with profound teachings about the Goeth’s quotation, I have got a different way to feel about these good at English speakers. I feel that they are far away from “practical” and so closed to “utilitarian”. They skip the very basic and crucial step – well learning and jump right to applying stage – actually imitating to speak English, for a very reality-purpose is earning money, even is life-changing as getting marriage to foreigners. Therefore, no matter how good they are at English speaking, they will be still heathens to English – just like many monks and Buddhists who follow Buddha’s Dharma but do not have right view so can not speak right speech despite of unhesitatingly dharma speaking.

Through here, I am full of gratefulness to be a Thanh Tri practitioner, to be one of Guru’s disciples. I, along with vajra brothers, have been day by day learning from Guru in step by step to get the most important thing in Dharma practice – right view, the foundation for right speech, and other right ones, to make better our lives and others. I pray for all of us will nurture Guru devotion and keep diligence in reading articles and commenting on chanhtuduy.com.

I sincerely pray for health and longevity of Guru and your consort.

Pray for all beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

Pray for the covid-19 pandemic will be soon eliminated.

    Dear Guru,

I am glad to read ” A long distance trip 7: IT IS GREEN BUT NOT GREAT”.

Thank you, Guru, for generously giving us the lesson about meaning of “the life is dharma, the dharma is life”. Through the story of good English speaking of a ethnic woman relating into the Dharma helps me understand that even though Buddhists who have access to the sutras, recite sutras in foreign languages such as Tibetan and Sanskrit, if without real understanding the true meaning, they cannot apply dharma to life to gradually transform the mind in the right direction to benefit themselves, benefit other people, then, they are still like a parrot can only recite.

I pray for the health and longevity of Guru and your consort for the sake of beings.

I pray for the wisdom torch to light all places through the Guru’s transport channel.

Thanks to the wonderful means of right view practice: read and comment on chanhtuduy.com, we can obtain right view and apply right view into speech in our daily life. Thanks to right view, we can also practice right speech not only to help ourselves but others to avoid causing bad karmas, accumulate good karmas and most importantly, lead them into the path of liberation. This is the reason why the right speech is one of Bodhicitta’s aspect. May people only speak about Dharma! Thank you very much for your beneficial sermon.

  44. Nguyễn Cát says:

    Dear Guru,

I am elated to read your 7th article for the new destination on this long distance trip.

I just felt so interesting to know that you have been like me, like an ordinary person in the past when having a dream of being somewhere far away, with no cell phone, no other electronic devices, even nobody and just relaxing with a good book. It seemed to be an impossible dream but now, I am happy that your dream has come true.

I felt that I had no courage to paint a worldly dream for myself for a long time and until now. I don’t know why but I’m a little “jealous” to you. However, what I find most significant is that you ended this article with a noble dream, a dream where everyone has right speech and talks about Dharma only. From your teachings, I understand that only right view leads to right speech, so we have to continuously improve our right view by reading and commenting on chanhtuduy.com.

I am grateful for your sermon. I sincerely pray for your Dharma trip to be safe and successful.

May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May the covid 19 pandemic soon end.

    Dear Guru!

I am delighted to read your article and beautiful photos on your long distance trip to Sa Pa town.

I can contemplate the fresh and peaceful beauty of Sa Pa town in that photos. Story about the woman of ethnic minorities can speak English very well, she can speak English to earn money. But she have not write or teach English yet. However, she learn English to bring advantages for her and other people. Through that, I realized that I have to have right view when practicing Dharma, not that only conversations or speaking purely, don’t bring any advantage.

Thank you so much for your meaningful article.

May you and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha-nature.

May the covid will soon to be eradicated soon.

  46. Mật Khánh Văn says:

Through the article I understand that the language practitioners Buddha’s Dhama speaking is by right speech. It means no talking bout evil words, about divination, about the future, about good days and bad days, feng shui , about other people, about lying…only talking about Dharma and through reading  and commenting on chanhtuduy.com.Thank you Guru for your meaningful lesson.

    Dear Holy Guru!

I am delighted to read your article. Sapa is where people want to go. There are many nice words about this place. Also, the language for humans is a growing explosion. But some people can’t become a real dharma because they don’t look at the right speed. A girl or a boy can speak another foreign language even though they are not in any classrooms. But they can master the living tools well.
Dhamar practice has given the tools, leading to a vast path to enlightenment and freedom.
Thanks, Guru for writing the article. I pray best for my Guru and his consort to live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
Maybe COVID 19 will end soon.

  60. Tantra Dharmapabodhisita says:

The seventh article of the long-distance trip series is based on the It is green but not great. I see the beauty of the Sa Pa town through our Guru’s eyes. Speaking ability of any language depends on necessarily and Guru has given an example of a lady who doesn’t understand English grammar, but she speaks English very well. She is earning her livelihood as a tourist guide.

Guru raised a question for our understanding which language practitioners Buddha’s Dharma speak? Guru replied very beautifully that the person who can speak right speech must have the right view. We, the learners and disciples, have proud on ITA institute because our Guru is clarifying and purifying our heart through articles on chanhtuduy.com.

Guru gave a vision to all of us that only practice Dharma without right view can’t speak the right speech, and without right speech, you speak all day, but it is a group of conversations each other or isn’t worth anything. We have to give up this habit only to talk about Dharma. We have to practice under a Guru who has a great understanding of the right view.

    Om Mani Padme Hum!

Dear holy Guru I do my thanks for your beautiful article “long-distance travel”. I read this article with great pleasure and am how poetic you have worked this article. It could be seen to read that you wanted to see this place and described it with Gothes’ quotations. Göthe was a wise and poetic man. , he taught people just like you. As Goethe said, “Every moment is of infinite value.” “You don’t travel to arrive, but to travel.” This is exactly how I feel about my trip. I want to hike, live, laugh and enjoy every moment of mind, you can also build beautiful things out of stones that will get in your way. when i started to learn buddhism i realized very quickly that the dharma is the most influenced good. But I did not understand some things because of the words that I would not translate, heard how the young woman who spoke English but never became that language and gold-plated in school or the principle “gold-plated” first learn, then use! “. But you learn a language, you compensate for it when you use it. Cap. I recognize myself in this person as the one who came and did not study the Dharma but continues to learn and live in life. Recognize in all your wise ways you give us your wise knowledge. That you teach us to correspond. I will relate and, with the help of yours, continue to work on articles and advice to work the Dharma. This costs me a lot of strength, but I found peace and quiet in the Buddhist teaching. It is my journey that I find myself in and I stumble and stumble, but it will always be the journey that I wanted and that I am committed to and I am glad that you are holy guru my / our companion. I wish you a nice fried day and I was happy to bake a cake for you and listen to your wise words. Those who enjoy doing and enjoying what they have done are happy. ”
May Guru have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha nature.
May covid 19 pandemic soon end.

    Dear holy Guru,

I am delighted reading this interesting chapter of your journey.

Through your kind words and vivid images, I find a deep meaning that you send to us disciples through your message “It is green but not great”. With it, you teach me a lesson about the importance of the combination of learning, thinking, and practicing the Dharma. The three of them should not be separated, but maintained the balance between them. Just like a Dharma practitioner cannot have right speeches without right views, the Dharma should not be just only talked about, but have to be applied to our daily life. This is the reason why Guru came up with the solution of “Life is Dharma, Dharma is Life”. I thank you for your compassion.

With this being acknowledged, I feel lucky for having Guru guiding me, teach me the importance of having right views from the early days when I began to learn the Dharma. I bow my head before your lotus feet.

I sincerely pray for the long and healthy lives of Guru and his consort for the sake of all sentient beings,

May all sentient being attain happiness of Buddha’s nature.

Con đã đọc bài 7: “It is green but not great” rồi ạ.

This article helps me remember the Guru’s teaching: Talking about Dharma, how much time is not enough. Talking about the world, one sentence, one word is redundant. When we only talking about Dharma with slogan “Dharma is life, life is Dharma”, it means “right speech” and the most important thing that we need the right view to speak right speech.
By reading and commenting chanhtuduy.com day by day, we have right view and from which we have the right thoughts, the right actions and the right speechs.
